Town of Sangerville Capital Campaign

In 2014, the Town of Sangerville purchased the Wells Farm adjacent to the Veterans’ Memorial Recreation Field. This squared off our property and gave the Town additional frontage on Manhanock Pond. Since 2014 we have used some of the acquired land to enlarge the much needed available parking. We have also been working on plans to eventually make optimum use of the Wells property to create a municipal parkthat has activities for outdoor recreation that appeals to all age groups. Last year a crew from the Charleston Corrections facility cut down all the shrubs and small trees that were taking over the field. This spring we cleared the field of the left over stumps so that the area can be reclaimed for building a 150’ x 240’ multi-purpose playing field that would support soccer as well as other sports. The reconstructed area would also provide for additional parking.
The volunteer labor from Charleston Correctional and a $1,500
contribution from Pirate Recreation allowed us to clear the field. We need your support to level the area to make it suitable for a playing field and then to hydro seed the field. We have volunteers ready to level the field using Town equipment. We have volunteers willing to provide the equipment and the labor to hydro seed the field. What we don’t have are the funds to cover the field with good loam and the funds to purchase the seed. This is where we hope that you can help with a contribution toward the estimated cost of $1,000 for the seed and the estimated $7,000 needed to purchase and haul the loam.
Future plans for the Veterans’ Memorial Park include an 18’ gazebo where we can offer band concerts during the summer, shade trees, benches and picnic tables, horseshoe and bocce courts, protected parking for boat trailers, and water and rest room facility using the existing septic and water systems of the former Wells homestead.
The concession building could be moved to the Wells side with expanded storage for the recreation equipment and complete with an electrical hook-up. The swimming area needs refurbishment and the addition of a fishing pier for children. A possible boardwalk could connect the boat launch to the swimming area. A 3,050’ summer walking and winter snowshoeing trail could circumnavigate the Park.
Veterans’ Memorial Park is a valuable community treasure. Would you join us in making a lasting contribution to our Capital Campaign to develop a multi-use recreational park for all ages and all seasons? For significant donations, we can offer sponsorship opportunities and appropriate signage. Every donation helps us m
ove forward.
